What is a Social Enterprise?
A social enterprise uses business strategies and principles to meet a social or environmental mission.
Turn90 meets a critical community need by providing employment opportunities and reentry support to men returning from incarceration through mission-driven business activities. Our social enterprises, including screen-printing and logistics services, offer paid transitional work that empowers participants to rebuild their lives. Revenue from these businesses is reinvested into our holistic program, which includes cognitive behavioral classes, supportive services, and job placement assistance.
How is a nonprofit social enterprise different from a for-profit business?
The difference lies in two areas:
A for-profit business may be philanthropic with some of its revenues and will be rewarded with a tax deduction. But ultimately, all profits must go to their owners and financial shareholders because that is the reason the company exists—to make profits.
A nonprofit social enterprise exists to fulfill a social and/or environmental mission, and 100% of any profits made are spent to further the mission.
